the 10th annual avant garde festival (on a train of penn central cars)
On December 9, 1973, cellist and performance artist Charlotte Moorman held the 10th Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York at Grand Central Station. She established the festival in 1963 as an open forum for the burgeoning experimental music and performance scene that was emerging out of Fluxus. The festival ran for 15 years at equally avant garde venues such as Whitehall Terminal/Staten Island Ferry, Ward Island, Grand Central Terminal, Shea Stadium and more. All images here were shot that eve by Allen Tannenbaum and are from the book New York in the 70s.

George Kuchar, 1967. "I dedicate this film poem to the behemoths of yesteryear that perished in Siberia along with the horned pachyderms of the pre-glacial epoch. This chilling montage of crimson repression must be seen. Painstakingly filmed and edited, it will be painful to watch, too." — George Kuchar
Brothers from another planet… Mike and George Kuchar. Paintings by George. John Waters said, "these are the guys who made me want to make movies… to me they were the Warner Brothers of the underground."
